Under2 Coalition 2023 impact report

2023 was a year of growth and ambition for the Under2 Coalition. Now comprising 177 states and regions, our governments have been more visible and active on the world stage than ever before. 

For the first time, states, regions and cities were fully represented at COP last December, with a Local Climate Action Summit hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Through this we saw how much impact subnational governments are having on the ground and how much more they could do with greater levels of support. As we move towards COP29 later in the year, we want to keep up this pace and work more with national governments to get things done where they're needed most.

Subnational governments were also invited to speak at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York in September. Standing alongside national leaders, they highlighted the barriers they often face in accessing climate finance and in adapting to increasingly severe weather events. Our co-chair, California Governor Gavin Newsom, also spoke out about the climate crisis as a 'fossil fuel crisis' as he vowed to hold big polluters to account in working towards a more liveable planet for all people.

Alongside these high level opportunities, the Under2 Coalition's secretariat, Climate Group, has continued to develop and support practical projects across the world to tackle the causes and consequences of climate change. From silvopastoral farming systems in Latin America to a programme for State Climate Fellows in India we have been spearheading change alongside our governments as we work towards net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
