About us

We're an international nonprofit founded in 2003, and officially launched in 2004, with offices in London, New York, New Delhi, Amsterdam and Beijing.

In that time, we’ve grown our network to include over 500 multinational businesses in 175 markets worldwide.

We also work closely with governments at all levels. The Under2 Coalition, for which we're the Secretariat, is made up of 167 state and regional governments and has been named one of the international cooperative initiatives with the highest potential for emissions reductions.

Our work

Science says that we must cap global warming at 1.5°C to avoid the disastrous effects of climate change. To be in with a fighting chance at doing this, we must halve global emissions in the next 10 years–that's why the 2020s have to be the Climate Decade.

Our mission

Our mission is to drive climate action. Fast.

Our goal

Our goal is for a world of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with greater prosperity for all.

What we do

We make it happen: we convince, challenge and help organisations to make commitments, then turn them into action.

We multiply it: we build and run networks. We join up organisations to unlock the power of collective action that shares the same ambitions and creates influence.

We shout about it: we share what we achieve together to show more organisations what they could do.

How we do it

Scale: we power large networks and hold each organisation accountable.

Speed: we focus on action now - not action tomorrow.

Collaboration: we share what we achieve together to show other organisations what they could do.

Who we work with

We work with leaders and decision makers from business and government because they shape the market frameworks that can help the world achieve net zero emissions by 2050. They have the tools and influence to make it possible in the time we have left.

The systems we work in

Our work is focused in systems with the highest emissions and where our networks have the greatest opportunity to drive change. They include energy, transport, built environment and industry.

We also work with governments around the world to secure policies and actions with the greatest scope for change. As part of this we act as Secretariat to the Under2 Coalition - the largest network of states and regions committed to net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

And we host Climate Week NYC, which annually brings together voices from across business, government and civil society to discuss and implement climate action now.

How we're funded

Climate Group depends on the support of like-minded donors who appreciate the scale of the challenge that we face and the time-limited nature of an effective response.

Philanthropic donations underpin many of our major initiatives. A valuable characteristic of philanthropic funding is that it is often entrepreneurial and stimulating – allowing Climate Group to kick-start new programmes which other funders can support at a later stage. Philanthropic donors also give more than just financial support. We value their leadership and view of the world, which is often different to our corporate and government partners.

In the last financial year, our philanthropic supporters included Bloomberg Philanthropies, ClimateWorks Foundation, Dutch Postcode Lottery, European Climate Foundation, International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Republic of Germany, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, New York Community Trust, Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment via Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI), Quadrature Capital Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Roy A. Hunt Foundation, Transport Scotland, Stiftung Mercator, New Venture Fund, Quebec’s Minister of Development, OpEPA/UK PACT Colombia, Navarra, WattTime, Edel Give Foundation, SED Stichting, High Tide Foundation, Clean Vehicles Coalition, the We Mean Business Coalition and its philanthropic partners, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, and The IKEA Foundation, as well as a number of private donors.

We also receive funding from companies and governments that have the potential to make a significant contribution towards reducing emissions in key systems:

  • Directly, in relation to their own emissions
  • Via influence on their value chain, including their investments
  • Via influence on the wider market and policy infrastructure for climate and energy issues

We have an inclusive approach that seeks to work with the business community as a critical sector in the global economy. Corporates contribute to Climate Group’s work through event sponsorship, membership payments, employee or CSR donations and on funded programmatic partnerships. Members of the Under2 Coalition also make membership payments or contribute through the Future Fund, special projects or in-kind support.

Our five largest sources of funding in the last financial year (FY 2021-2022) were:

  • Foundations 45%
  • Government grants 22%
  • Corporate sponsorship 15%
  • Corporate membership 12%
  • Government membership 3%
