About SteelZero

SteelZero is a global corporate initiative led by Climate Group bringing together over 40 ambitious businesses committed to driving the transition to a net zero global steel industry. Organisations that join SteelZero make a commitment to buy and use 100% net zero steel by 2050, or earlier.

We’re connected to a network of over 500 businesses across Climate Group’s various initiatives and over 170 subnational governments through the Under2 Coalition.

We are...

Credible

We developed our commitment in close collaboration with our technical partner ResponsibleSteel, the global not-for-profit multi-stakeholder steel standard and certification initiative driving socially and environmentally responsible production of net zero steel.

Collaborative

Through a variety of roundtables, working groups and workshops across sectors and geographies, we foster deep collaboration between members. We also bring together key stakeholders during Climate Group’s flagship calendar of events.

Connected

With offices in London, Amsterdam, New York, New Delhi and Beijing, members operating worldwide, and local partners in Japan, South Korea and Brazil, we’re plugged in to drive steel decarbonisation on a global scale.

With members ranging from steel fabricators, construction firms right through to end users such as shipowners and car makers, we’re enablers of critical dialogue across the supply chain.

As part of global networks, including the Steel Breakthrough Agenda and We Mean Business Coalition, we’re feeding into vital forums shaping the global net zero steel transition.

The SteelZero commitment

Organisations that join SteelZero make a commitment to procuring, specifying or stocking 100% of their steel requirement by 2050 as net zero steel, with an interim commitment to procure, specify or stock lower emission steel for 50% of their steel requirement by 2030. This interim commitment can be met through one or both of the following pathways:

  1. Steel produced by a steelmaking site where the steelmaker has a science-based emissions target.
  2. ‘Lower emission steel’ (aligning with ResponsibleSteel Decarbonisation Progress Level 2)
