SteelZero calls on the new UK government to prioritise the net zero steel transition

In a letter to Sarah Jones MP, Minister of State for Industry and Decarbonisation, nearly 20 SteelZero members called on the new UK government to prioritise the steel industry's net zero transition with a coherent industrial strategy.

Climate Group warmly congratulates Sarah Jones MP in her new role. Alongside our SteelZero members, we see this moment as an opportunity for steel using businesses to work with the new Minister to focus on policies priorities which will effectively support the steel industry's decarbonisation.

With international competition in the green steel transition growing and regulations such as CBAM set to increasingly penalise high emission steel production, it’s critical the UK has a coherent strategy in place to remain competitive.

This letter specifically asks Sarah Jones MP to:

  • Develop an industrial strategy with sustainability and the rapid deployment of green technology at its core
  • Establish clear definitions for lower emission and net zero steel to support investment decisions and policy development
  • Implement public procurement rules to require the use of green steel in its purchased goods and services
