Norway has long been a global leader in using zero emission vehicles. This is due in great part to a longstanding incentive scheme encouraging people and businesses to switch to ZEVs.
Norway’s timeline for ZEV rollout includes:
- 100% of passenger car sales to be electric or hydrogen by 2025 (assumes technological maturity)
- 100% of new heavy vans should be zero emission by 2030
- 75% of new long-distance buses should be zero emission by 2030
- 50% of new lorries should be zero emission by 2030
The Norwegian government have invested in charging infrastructure to increase the uptake of ZEVs. There are now more than 17,000 charging points in Norway, representing 9% of the total charging stations in Europe. Buyers are offered an array of incentives to purchase a ZEV, including tax exemptions and reduced parking costs. Additional taxes for petrol and diesel cars help to finance these incentives.
Through its participation in the ZEV Community, Norway has joined state, regional, city and national governments from around the world in exchanging best practice and experiences of accelerating the transition to clean transport.
