Communities living in the shadow of major freight corridors face dangerous levels of pollution caused by dirty diesel trucks, and heavy-duty vehicles, like trucks and buses, make up 10% of the vehicles on the road, but 45% of the transportation sector’s nitrogen oxide pollution.
The Biden Administration released a plan today to provide expansive and convenient access to electric vehicle charging across freight corridors and truck depots while providing a pathway to the widespread adoption of zero emission heavy duty vehicles in the United States.
Climate Group’s Executive Director for North America Angela Barranco said:
“The Biden Administration's action to tackle pollution from trucks on US freight corridors is a commendable effort. Implementing the National Zero Emission Freight Corridor Strategy is crucial to ensuring investments in heavy-duty vehicle charging are strategically placed for maximum impact. These steps are vital for leaders in vehicle electrification in order to meet their ambitious targets. We appreciate the specific investments near the southern border that mirror insights from our collaboration with Kearney on cross-border fleet electrification. As the administration furthers its investment in zero-emission transportation, we strongly advocate for the next essential action: the implementation of stringent truck tailpipe emission standards.”
