About the project
With support from UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions), the project has delivered enhanced and sustained action on climate change. It has driven the necessary behavioural change and capabilities of subnational governments to reduce emissions in Colombia, while promoting a sustainable economic recovery, and aligning with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Project partners, OpEPA, Climate Group and The Climate Reality Project Latin America have supported the development of decarbonisation visions, across the transport and energy sectors, in Antioquia, Atlántico, Boyacá, Cundinamarca and Valle del Cauca. These five Colombian departments have the highest emissions in these sectors. This has been delivered through theoretical and practical workshops, including an e-learning platform, live sessions and multimedia material.
Project objectives
Strengthen the technical capacities of public officials in the departmental and municipal government offices to plan solutions that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in alignment with Colombia's Long Term Climate Strategy (E2050) and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Build impactful local narratives for the promotion of a productive low-carbon economy for the benefit of local communities.
Catalogue of Policy Actions
The Decarbonisation Actions Catalogue provides subnational governments with the actions, adaptable to their specific context, to reduce emissions in the energy and transport sectors. The catalogue ensures that subnational governments adopt actions that support and align to national government policies, including Colombia's Long Term Climate Strategy (E2050) and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Project progress
Five Colombian departments have participated in virtual workshops with the Under2 Coalition to develop and strengthen their decarbonisation pathways, particularly in the areas of transport and energy.
Antioquia, Atlántico, Boyacá, Cundinamarca and Valle del Cauca have published videos showing how they will work towards reducing their carbon emissions and play an active role in fighting climate change.
Final decarbonisation visions
Following a year of work, each of the five participating governments have successfully developed a long-term decarbonisation vision for energy and transport, in line with Colombia's NDC and E2050 Long-Term Strategy for Climate Resilience.
